The beautiful beach promenade, which is now being extended right into Puerto Banus and Marbella, houses one of the oldest and most traditional restaurants belonging to Taberna del Alabardero. This exceptional restaurant specialising in Paellas has incredible sea views over to Africa and Gibraltar. Large, spacious and filled with light, this restaurant has seating for many, indoors, outdoors and in a covered patio yet still manages to exude a feeling of cosiness and familiarity. White sails strung across the ceiling under open skylights add to the airy atmosphere and the occasional bird manages to get through and give a small flight display before leaving through one of the many large patio doors. Fresh flowers on the tables and at night candles and torches give out a feeling of exotic warmth. Beach sun beds can be rented in summer so that you can spend the day getting a tan and come into the restaurant for lunch or dinner. There is a large BBQ area that is opened in summer to one side of the restaurant and to the other, there is a swimming pool with a children's playground and a blow up castle. Indeed, the Beach Club is ideal for families with children. There is a choice of several dishes for a 3-course children's meal which comes on a menu of it's own which the children can colour in with crayons provided by the personnel. Once they start getting fidgety, parents can leave them in the care of a child minder who looks after the children in the playground outside (Saturday & Sundays all day) so mum and dad can have that long overdue bottle of wine and allowing other diners to enjoy their dinners in peace. All in all the maître Juan-Carlos and his team offer an excellent and attentative service making sure that everyone feels relaxed and cared for. The food is top class and as well as the paellas (which can also be ordered to take-away) the meat and fish dishes are fresh and made to order in the open kitchen. We started our menu with the Battered Tempura Prawns on Crispy Corn Salad. The crispy corn - Kikos - are chopped up corn kernels and fried until crisp. Very unusual and delicious. Our second starter was the Seafood Croquettes with Fried Onions Rings. Creamy mashed fish in a delicate crispy batter, very light. We were then served some grilled small cuttle fish, which weren't on the menu but can always be ordered if you're a lover of seafood. They were very tender with a touch of garlic. Our fourth starter was the Salmorejo (a thick Andalucian bread & tomato soup), which was served with Fried Battered Aubergines. This was also surprisingly light. Portions are very generous and some of the fried dishes can be ordered as half portions. Very appreciated by Andalujos team of restaurant testers! We tried the light whipped mayonnaise with a touch of garlic as well as the very spicy red sauce, both served with the Patatas Bravas and both equally finger lickingly good. We were then served two different paellas; one with Ox Tail and Baby Broad Beans, the other with King Prawns, Octopus and Spring Onions. Both were very aromatic, moist and absolutely recommendable. The paella itself is for two, the price being per person, but the serving is so large that three can easily share, especially if you want to leave room for dessert. The large choice of homemade desserts must be tried. Ranging from Apple Cake with Cinnamon Ice-cream, Leche Frita (fried milk!) to a Trio of Cheese with nuts. We were served a new speciality in a spice jar (!) called "Arena de la Playa" (sea sand). This consisted of Apple Jelly, Chocolate Buttons, a wonderful fluffy mousse au chocolate and the sand was crumbled wholemeal biscuit. The house wines are excellent and well priced the white and rosé being Penedes wines and the red, a Rioja. Otherwise there is a large choice of Spanish wines, Spanish and French Cava and Champagnes. We will certainly come back !!!
