Facts: The graves of the catholic king Fernando and his Queen Isabel, lay to rest here. Her grandson Carlos V finally managed to finish the Capilla in 1521 and brought their bodies here. Carlos V also had tombs carved for his parents Juana La Loca (Joanna the Mad) and Felipe el Hermoso (Philip the Fair) who died 1505. Actually,Carlos V was not very nice to his mother. He made her sign a paper of abdication in 1517 declaring her mad and then locked her up for 38 years in a windowless cell without visitor rights until she died in 1555. Facts: Work began in 1521 when the Spaniards broke their promise to protect the great mosque and built the cathedral on top of it. Completion was in 1703. Typically, the various architects over the centuries could not decide on one style and a mix of styles derived. Gothic by Enrique Egas, which is reflected in the Capilla Real and later Diego de Siloes Renaissance influences, which he thought would look better. It is a lovely cathedral with white high stucco ceilings. In the middle are two impressive golden organs with horizontal pipes, which are typical for Spanish organs. I thought one of the interesting things there are the huge choral books, which were hand painted in the 15th century.
