If you're a fan of fresh seafood and fish, if you love sitting looking over the beach and across the sea, if you love eating where the Spanish eat then El Pescador is the place to go. Situated directly on the beach promenade in Estepona this restaurant will fulfil all of the above criteria. Alfonso the owner has created a place which shows it's affinity to the fishing trade of this town on the Costa del Sol without filling it with paraphernalia. A few fishing nets hang from the white wooden rafters, ships bells are positioned on the wall and the lamps are made from driftwood and pulleys. The outside seating is on the promenade and on weekends especially, is packed. The tables are beautifully laid with linen tablecloths and each has a bottle of Extra Virgin Olive Oil and Chardonnay Vinegar (as opposed to the Sherry Vinegar normally offered) on them. The friendly and efficient waiters, in our case Juan Luis and Joaquin, took our drinks order and bought bread with a small glôche of fresh butter, as well as an amuse bouche from the kitchen. This was a delicious crispy filo pastry "parcel" with a filling of shrimp and fish. We asked Alfonso to serve us various small portions of dishes El Pescador is known for. The first was a plate of freshly sliced tomatoes with anchovies. (Tomates con Anchoas) An excellent mixture of freshness combined with saltiness. Then we were served excellent fresh, raw cockles. (Coquinas) These were so fresh, they tasted of the sea and although served with lemon wedges, I sprinkled some of the Chardonnay vinegar on them and could have spent the rest of the evening just eating that. But more was to come. Gambas Pil Pil, known to everyone who has ever eaten in a Spanish restaurant, no matter where in the World. The spiciness was just right, the garlic tender and not burnt and the olive oil just enough. Our next dish was Cigalas, known to us as Norwegian prawns. These came in a delicious white wine, garlic sauce just made for dunking bread. Finally we had a plate with deep fried squid rings and anchovies. The batter was extremely light, almost transparent, the squid tender and not at all chewy and the anchovies succulent. This was served with a timbale of mixed bell peppers and onions which looked as good as it tasted. Our desserts consisted of a huge slice of puff pastry filled with a custardy cream (Milhojas), a large piece of cheesecake, (Tarta de Queso) and a chocolate and a Baileys mousse. All desserts are made in-house and definitely something for those with a sweet tooth. Although we didn't try them, we were too full, but El Pescador also serves various fresh paella, which take about 1 hour to prepare, so order as soon as you arrive. Meat eaters will find an excellent choice of grilled or fried meats, just as tasty as the fish dishes.
Although we didn't see it on any menu, but Alfonso has a good choice of very unusual gins and two single malt whiskies. Talking of drinks - you will be asked at the end of the meal if you would like a "chopito". This is an after dinner drink and you can choose whatever you want and the bottle will be left at the table for you to pour yourself a second, a third !!! El Pescador; great food, great view, good people.
