The village and its spectacular views were admired long ago by 19th century English artists of romanticism, such as Roberts and Lewis, who left their impressions in engravings that were used to illustrate many traveller books of Spain. In his original libretto of the opera Carmen, Prosper Merimé placed the meeting of Carmen and her lover in the town of Gaucín.
Situated in the mountain range of Ronda in the province of Malaga, Gaucín is approx. 30 km from the sea at 600 meters above sea level. Gaucín is one of the 29 other cities and white villages on the Almorávides and Almohades route. Gaucín is a perfect place to go hiking or riding. The town lies very well situated, protected from the cold winds of the north facing south towards Africa and Gibraltar.
