Gibraltar is one of the last British Colonies, situated at the most southern part of the Spanish peninsula on the Straits of Gibraltar with views over to Africa. The name derives from the Arabic name "Gibel Tariq", meaning Rock of Tariq. The sovereignty of Gibraltar is an ongoing major issue between Spain and Britain and still leads to heavy disputes. The Rocks main attractions are located on the "Upper Rock". The most convenient way of exploring this area is by taxi; all cab drivers are "˜tourist guides"™ providing you with a lot of extra information and if you"™re lucky, a lesson in Spanglish "“ the dialect spoken in Gibraltar. A visit to the Magot Apes (the symbol of Gibraltar) is almost a must. The saying goes that when the apes leave Gibralter, so will the British. The towns itself is great for duty free shopping, most shops being on Main Street and the Casemates Square. Here you can buy jewellery, electrical equipment (beware: English plugs!), perfume and cigarettes. There are several English and Irish pubs where you can have a typical English breakfast, a steak and kidney pie or scones with clotted cream. Cider and Guinness are on tap to round off that "˜English Feel"™. Two of my favourite places are Saccarelli´s and Clipper. Red Double Decker"™s and Bobbies are also an attraction in Gibraltar. Round Christmas and in autumn classical concerts are held in the caves. A truly wonderful experience to listen to music, surrounded by illuminated stalagmites and stalactites. Please check out our Google calendar to see which events are taking place this year.
