Meson del Castillo is located in the beautiful, quaint fishing village of Duqesa de Castillo. Its three streets join into one small square which has an imposing statue of a naked lady draped with gossamer fishing nets. A large outside terrace offers plenty of seating for enjoying a meal or just having a drink and watching people passing by. The front part of the restaurant is a roofed conservatory with large wooden windows that can be opened up in summer and in winter, when closed, still gives you that ‘out-of-door’ feeling. Leading off from there are two more cosy dining areas and the bar. There is also a separate room, which can be booking for private dinners. The windows in the conservatory are covered with climbing vines and the walls are decorated with pictures related to fishing. There are no neon lights or paper tablecloths typical of many village restaurants; quite the opposite, Mesón del Castillo has wall lamps and white linen tablecloths creating an atmosphere of warmth and charm. Antonio, the proprietor and his wife have been running the restaurant for 27 years and Antonio is very much a host inviting you into his home. We were greeted with a complimentary glass of dry sherry, green olives, artichokes and bread. Our menu started with a Sopa de AjoCortillo, (clear broth with garlic slices) which was a delicious light soup with plenty of garlic, chopped ham, a poached egg and slices of soaked toast on top. We also had the Sopa de Marisco al Mesón, a tasty bisque with shrimps, mussels and clams. In fact, it must be mentioned here that all the portions served in Mesón del Castillo are very generous. The Cocktail de Gambas which we also had was no exception to this. Fresh fish is of course a speciality due to the location of Mesón del Castillo and you can be assured that anything you choose from the menu will still have the aroma of the sea about it. You can choose to have your fish oven-baked or grilled. We chose to have oven-baked sea bream which had a subtle splashing of olive oil and white wine. It was cut in half, served on the bone and tender. All dishes apart from the rice dishes are served with carrots, peas and boiled potatoes. Our second main dish was the Arroz caldoso con Bogavante - you have to order it for mimimum 2 person, but the portion was certainly enugh for 4. There are of course meat dishes and especially the Cordero con Piniones sounded inviting and we’ll be sure to order it next time we go. In order to give us an overview of the home-made desserts (Antonio’s wife’s part) we were served ‘smaller’ portions of TartaAlmendra, moist with a wonderful taste of marzipan; Tocino de Cielo, lush and sweet with a splash of caramel sauce and the typically Spanish Flan which was one of the best we’ve tasted. Antonio invited us to a copa de casa, a wonderful tradition in Spanish restaurants, which is being forgotten more and more and underlined his hospitality even more.
Mesón del Castillo is a restaurant the offers excellent service, Spanish ambience and good value for money.
