Located on a side street off the main road in the old town of Tarifa, this beautiful restaurant in the La Sacristia Hotel. One of the oldest buildings, dating from 1677, this restaurant has all the atmosphere and charm of the Arabian World melting with Spanish culture. The restaurant has two dining areas, one at the entrance by the reception desk, which is also the bar and the other in the atrium. A third area serves as an exclusive boutique in summer, selling clothing and jewellery, carefully selected from different parts of the world. In the colder months it is a comfortable, cosy lounge area. The restaurant is on a corner and there is a small outdoor area with tables and chairs on the cobble stone street, for eating outside. The owners love of art is visible everywhere and a constantly changing exhibition of paintings and pictures adorn the restaurants walls. Buddha busts, flowers and plants, indirect lighting and candles all add to the warm ambience of this wonderful restaurant. The menu is a mix of dishes from various parts of the world, made from local seasonal products, cooked to perfection and served with a choice of Spanish wines. The staff is friendly, competent and charming. Joe, the American Chef presented us with his own personal choice of dishes to give us a cross section of the menu or what he had as specialities of the day. As starters we had a small glass of Lobster Soup, the spicy, creamy taste was perfect to get the taste buds going. Followed by Kibe, a Lebanese meat croquette, juicy minced meat with a crunchy coating and a Moroccan "Brik", which was a mixture of chicken, egg and cinnamon wrapped in filo pastry. To accompany this, we chose a cold, crisp rosé wine from Navarra. The main courses were introduced with Pan Seared Red Tuna with ginger & leek julienne. The Tuna was pink in the middle and the taste of ginger blended nicely with the leeks and was a perfect accompaniment. The Orange glazed Iberian Pork loin was tender and served with a timbale of mixed rice topped with corn. If you’re a stranger to Iberian pork, then this dish is a must to savour the meat of the black pig, raised on open plains, feeding on acorns. Our third main dish was a Sirloin Burger topped with caramelized onions, mushrooms and banana chips. An amazing blend and as far away from Mac burgers as the earth is to the moon! Duck comfit isn't everyone's way of eating duck but In La Sacristia it is served with an extremely crispy coat, wonderful chunky mashed potatoes and a savory, sweet mixed berry jam. Every dish was amazing and we were of course looking forward to the homemade desserts in spite of being pleasantly full up, but as everyone knows, there's always room for dessert. Apple Tartin often has a hard pastry base but ours was soft and full of flavor, topped with tangy apples and served with vanilla ice cream. Chocolate lovers should order the Chocolate Coulant, a warm cake with a soft filling, rich in taste and served with vanila ice-cream. Two of us would never order a sorbet but once again the Chef was able to convince them with his creamy lemon sorbet with a very generous slug of Orujo - a Spanish "schnapps" that blended surprisingly well with the sharp lemony texture of the sorbet. La Sacristia Restaurant combines excellent food, warm atmosphere and a wonderful location. We were sorry to leave our perfect hosts, Teresa, Joe and Memet but we will certainly be back and hope that we might meet YOU there.
