Facts:
The cathedral occupies the site of a great mosque built in the 12th century and is still the bell tower, known as Giralda. Work on the cathedral began under the reign of King Fernando III of Castile. It was extended and rebuilt from 1402- 1506 with the intention "to make a church that is so huge that those who will see it will think we are mad". For sure it is the biggest gothic church in the world and the 3rd largest Christian church after St.Peters in the Vatican and St. Peters in London.
The Giralda are two towers built inside each other with ramps leading up to a platform which the sultan used to mount his horse.
