Work on the cathedral began under the reign of King Fernando III of Castile. It was extended and rebuilt from 1402- 1506 with the intention "to make a church that is so huge that those who will see it will think we are mad". For sure it is the biggest gothic church in the world and the 3rd largest Christian church after St.Peters in the Vatican and St. Peters in London. The Giralda are two towers built inside each other with ramps leading up to a platform which the sultan used to mount his horse.

Take an audiotour per person, it gives you some interesting historical and art background information. Facts: Originally a Moorish fortress built in 931AD, Alfonso X and Pedro I built extensions. In 1350 "“ 1368, Pedro I decided to convert it into his royal home in Mudejar style. Carlos V added a palace of his own on to it in Renaissance style.The upper floor is still used when Spanish royals are in town and can be visited as a guided tour during special visiting hours.
