Eagle Castle Closed on Monday and Tuesday June - September 10.30am - 1.30pm and 6pm – 8pm October - May 10.30am - 1.30pm and 4pm – 6pm Do not be surprised if it is closed despite the official opening hours this is Spain after all!!! The castle, probably of Roman origin was used for many centuries as an observation tower. It was the site of many battles between Christians and Arabs. In one of these battles Guzmán el Bueno was killed. Today, only the retaining outside walls as well as the bell tower remains. The hermitage of the Holy Child (La Ermita del Santo Niño) is located in the interior of the castle and was built in the 17th century. The Holy Child festival is held every year on the 7th of September in Gaucin and is the towns most important celebration . The holy protector of the village is the Virgen de Nieves (holy virgin of snow), but in reality, the inhabitants appointed the holy child Jesus as their protector, because they received this sculpture in the year 1540 from San Juan de Dios as a gift. The celebrations for the Holy Virgen of Snow take place in the second week of August; the celebrations is in honor of the holy child Jesus and take place on the 7th and 8th of September. There is also a pilgrimage in honour of San Juan on June 23rd. Cementery The cemetery is located at the foot of the castle and is worth while visiting. It is beautiful, like many cemeteries in the white villages . San Sebastián church Inaugurated on the 12 of November 1487. The exterior is very simple, but it is a magnificent example of the Baroque architecture inside. The wooden fresco depicts three people,one of which is the Virgin of Snow (Virgen de las Nieves) Convent The convent was converted many years ago into the cultural centre of GaucÃn. As a consequence it is not a tourist attraction point, although you will still find it under monuments in the tourist office. It was guttered out and the windows were modernized taking away the original charm it had. There is a playground in front of the building.
Fountain 6 Canons Located in the Plaza Antonio (currently under construction). This is a beautiful fountain dating from 1628. Its style is baroque andalusian. The front part is divided into six spaces representing six faces which serve as fountains.
Ethnographic museum This is the location of the tourist office as well as the ethnographic museum of GaucÃn. The opening hours as such are the same. The entrance is free and the museum consists of one room decorated with tools used in the fields.
