La Cartuja Monastery Isla de la cartuja Tel: +34 955 037 070 (tourist map Nr. G3) Open: Tuesday – Friday 10am – 8pm Saturday 11am – 8pm Sunday 10am – 3pm Price: 1.80€ art exhibitions, 1.80€ cartuja (church) Free on Tuesdays Facts: Founded in 1399, it used to be the site of the monastery of St. Maria de las Cuevas. Christopher Columbus stayed here to plan his second voyage to the New World. During the Napoleonic occupation from 1810-1812, the monks fled to Portugal and left the place deserted. In 1836, it was purchased by Charles Pickman and turned into a ceramic factory until 1982. The site itself is pretty deserted and run down. It is rather disappointing, although the tomb is interesting. A seperate, modern building within the complex has exhibitions of Modern Art , so if you are an art lover it is worth finding out what exhibitions are taking place whilst you are there (ask at the tourist office).
